audience analysis/ audience adaptation

So, the importance of audience analysis and audience adaptation in the speech development process is very simple. It’s the audiences attention towards the speech, what I mean is the reaction of the facial expression. The way you give your speech is the way you observe your surroundings. If the audience is smiling or confused, the tone or the speed of your voice will vary because you might not expect their reaction to be that way. I know this might be confusing but I guess it is just the way I feel. Anyways, what I am planning to do in my speech is probably getting the audience’s attention by using visuals so they wont have to listen to my boring speech haha.

speech buddy adapting to your audience

I really enjoyed the videos this week. Not only because it’s very useful but it helps you feel more comfortable around your surroundings. Making a connecting with your audience will help you overcome your fear because you connect by being on the same page with everyone. So in the video, Matthew did a great job informing the audience with a lot of information and backup to get to his point which was the responsibilities of drinking. Also, he didn’t stay in one spot and just read notes off his paper. He used the overhead to possibly get the audience's attention with a visual so it’s not so boring listening to the guy.

what i found in chapter 6 that was interesting

the topic that was discussed in chapter six was about the research in a speech before presenting it. shows you different ways to do a research on the topic of your choice. what i thought was interesting and very useful was the sources that can be used in the library. i actually never thought to go to the library to do my research, i mean it is common sense to do so but i always use the sources right in front of me, such as the internet or anything that can help around the house. but in reality, the library really is a great place to do research because it provides us with variety of sources we can use in different sections such as the internet, bibliography, books, magazines, etc.

Chapter 6 response

The videos once again gave me useful tips that I can use to improve my speech ability. The first video gave me more confidence about the use of the library. How I can get information about the research im doing and to not be shy about asking the librarians for help haha. Also, doing a full research about my topic is very crucial in presenting the information. Once again, the second video where Dory is giving her speech, just gives me the chills about the whole presenting speeches. The third video didn’t really interest me to much, talking about gastropods and slugs. I think over all, I will definitely keep in mind about the researching before the presentation since it seems like the key to a successful speech.

Research interview

Why yes, I have done a research interview. This was done in my high school days as a senior I believe. The interview went fairly well due no knowledge of what I was saying though. But the interview went better than I expected. This guy I interviewed was a music producer but not yet famous. My goal was to interview him about how he got into the business, who were his influences, and many more. I guess my weakness of the interview was the lack of time I spent studying about music production and such, therefore the interview was a little awkward on my part. I guess what I suggest everyone to do before interviewing someone is to do research on it.

The seven different sources of uncertainty

A interesting topic that stood out to me was the seven different sources of uncertainty, role as a speaker, speaking abilities, your ideas, the audience’s response, the setting, technology, and evaluation. All seven of these sources are very useful when speaking in public and I have not made the initiative to even think about them. By having all seven different sources of uncertainty in the back of my mind when speaking in public, I think it might help me with my apprehensive to public speaking. Other than the seven different sources of uncertainty, chapter two was very helpful to me because it filled me in with a lot of information that I have not thought about.

Speech Buddy Videos

First off, I didn’t even realize that the video’s we’re taken place at SJSU until the second video. But back to the assignment, what I learned from all three of the videos are techniques of recuperating yourself from the nervousness and visualizing the setting before giving the speech. Techniques that were shown in the video seems like it will relax my body and to keep my mind out of the gutter. In the second video, the guy talks about visualizing the setting before hand so that when you are giving the speech, you feel comfortable giving it because you already got used to the setting. Also, he mentioned that before giving the speech, you should be sure of the introduction as well as the conclusion to increase the confidence. The last video pretty much gave me a sneak peak of what I am going to be doing when we all meet up so it kind of gave me the chills.

What makes you apprehensive about public speaking?

The thing that makes me apprehensive about speaking in public is that all eyes are on me and if i make the tiniest mistake, people are there to witness it. Also, the seven different sources of uncertainty seem to be the main reason I fear public speaking all the time. Uncertainty about your role as a speaker, speaking abilities, your ideas, the audience’s response, the setting, technology, and evaluation all fit into my fear of public speaking. But the biggest fear out of the seven has to be uncertainty about the audience’s response. When I’m speaking, I feel so sure that my ideas are right but in the back of my head, I know the audiences are thinking different and this leads me apprehensive about speaking public. When I was in high school giving a speech for my English class, I experienced one of the seven different sources of uncertainty which happened to be the one about the response in the audience. I had to explain a current issue in the United States and I choose abortions. I did my research and had everything in order but this guy had to say something to correct me every second of my speech making me feel like I didn’t know my stuff. I then felt very uncomfortable speaking the rest of my speech.
