my main points for my next speech are the problem of healthy teeth, why most of us have unhealthy teeth, the solution that many of us are sticking too to have healthier teeth and what you can do to start taking care of your teeth from my opinions. of course i begin on giving my speech by using an attention getter. the way im going to get my audience's attention is by using statistics that i am going to provide. with my attention getter, i believe i can get the audience's attention really good. my attention getter is going pretty much make everyone realize their unhealthy teeth. my statistics will help everyone realize the facts about unhealthy teeth. i think everyone needs to realize and hopefully my speech will motivate people to start taking better care of their teeth.

sea of persuasion

So, I noticed, I am always immersed in a sea of persuasion. Im always being persuade to do something 24/7 and not really noticing it until now. For example, my friends always persuade me to go out to eat with them when I don’t really want to. They will tell me reasons that aren’t even relevant to eating to persuade me and it works. Another example would be those online advertisements where your forced to play some sort of game to win a prize. Even when im doing something important I am always persuaded into playing the game. So what I think I can do to become a more critical consumer or persuasive messages is understand what the situation is better. Since I am persuaded into a lot of things all the time, i think to persuade someone is to get deep into their skin and find that flip that switch so that person can understand what your talking about. I guess a lot of us are immersed in a sea of persuasion and don’t even know it.

so reading the little description on flickr, i dont really agree with it because i dont think calling someone a different name when they really are one, sexist. for example, when a female is a grown woman and you call them a girl, they should not get offensive because its just a name, a title and not what they are. for example, in high school, i told a girl that she was a girl and stated that she was a woman and got really mad at me. calling me sexist and all that. in the book, it talks about how people take words personally. so in a speech, i guess what you say can really affect someone and how they perceive ideas.

so in chapter 10, i pretty much learned a lot of the same stuff i learned from watching the interactive videos. tips such as audience-centered language. the tips that were given were things like putting your language in context by mentioning the location, reffering to current events, and responding to what happens during the speech. all these topics are great to use in speeches because it gets the audience's attention real fast. something you can relate to and using current events does open up their eyes to connect with the speech. also using we, us, you and i will also get their attention because the presenter is referring to the audience or whoever and this catches their attention. in chapter 11, it talks about presentation media. in the book it explains why we use them. draw attention to your topic. illustrate an idea that cant be fully described by words alone. stimulate an emotional reaction. clarify a key point. support your argument with a graphical display of facts and firures. help your audience rememeber your main ideas. all of these reason's are the reasons i use a powerpoint presentation and it seems to work. Also in this chapter, shows you a lot more media presentation that can be used durring a speech.

interactive videos

I learned a lot by watching all of the interactive videos. A lot of advice was given and planning on using them for my next speech of course. To deliver a good speech I learned you need to use humor, meaningful words, concise, voice and the 5 aspects of physical delivery. Using humor is always good during a speech but the video said to be careful when using humor and not to over do it. Meaningful words to get the audience more involved are very helpful as well. So your voice needs to have a good volume, pitch, pace and variety to deliver a solid speech. As shown in the video, the volume really needs to be at a good level for the audience to connect with you. If you’re dull and quiet, then the audience can’t really connect with you. The pace needs to be at a steady pace, not quick because the audience can mishear your speech. The 5 aspects of physical delivery are eye contact, facial expressions, gestures and body motion. All of these aspects are very important when giving your speech and I learned that I really need to work on all of these. I learned a lot from these videos and I will use all of these tips on my next speech.

so in chapter 11, what i found useful was the presentation tips that it gave me. tips such as, what a visual aid should look like and what it should hold. the tips that was provided by the book, were things like the different types of visual aids, special things that it should hold and to limit yourself in the visual aid itself. the different types of visual aids i could use are slides off a projector, or even using the white board. Ive always found that slides work the best considering that you have already prepared what is going to be presented and had some time to clean it up. another good tip i found useful was limiting myself in the visual aid. when it comes to using slides off the projector, i really dont put much description on the slides because im already talking about my topic. when creating my visual aid, i like to use pictures to present my topic so that my audience can have an image in their heads of what im talking about. for example, my last speech was on fraternity and i was talking about hazing. people who dont really know what hazing is and i was just talking about it, they can look at my slides to have a picture of what hazing is. i really think that slides off a projector is the best way to present your speech.

2nd speech

I gave my speech to my fraternity brothers during our chapter meeting on Monday. What I did differently was that I tried to focus on my audience more than my note card and the way I did this is I took a lot off the note card itself. I removed the details and just had main points. In my speech on Friday, I had a lot of detailed notes written down on my note card therefore I felt very comfortable just reading off it. But since this time I barely had anything, I had to talk with my own knowledge. I think I improved from my previous speech. I definitely had more confident as well as more eye contact because I knew that is what I had to improve on. So if I had to do this speech again, I think I would have added more information into my speech because I noticed while giving this speech, I wanted to say a lot more things. The feedback I got from the Friday class improved my speech. I got a lot that said to have better eye contact, as well as less reading off of note card. I took that into consideration and attempted to present the speech to my fraternity brothers without it. This exercise was useful and really helped me improve.
