beginning and the ending

so of course the begginning of the speech must be flawless to get the aduiences attention. according to the book, im right. haha you need to get your adueiences attention which will be the attention grabber. the attention grabber usually is something that stands out, something that the audience is not ready for. for example, your doing a speech oh fraternity. my attention grabber would be, HAZING, what is the first word that comes into your mind? something that will get the audiences attention is an attention getter.

developing your introduction. what you want to say in your introduction is pretty much introduce what your gonna say in your speech. first start off with a breif introduction of what your going to be talking about in your speech, then go into the purpose of this speech. another good thing to add in your speech is a preview of your main points, as written in the book. This will probably be in your introduction as well.

Now, developing your conclusion. Of course you want to review your main points in this too. That is probably the most important part in a conclusion. A review of the main points. To end your speech, it also needs to be flawless, you got to leave your audience with a great ending.

facts and statistics

so facts and statistics... i believe they are very useful in an persuasive speech, this is true because to persuade someone to do something, you need facts and statistics to convince someone that something may be true. for example, pretend your giving a speech on how to prevent drunk driving. the only way to persuade someone is to hit them with the facts and statistics. saying that drunk driving is one of the leading causes of death and more than 10,000 people have died because of drunk driving.

im not real sure what type of speech would not be good for facts and statistics. facts and statistics seems to be great in any type of speeches. out of all the speeches, the persuasive speech fits the best because, well as i stated above, to convince someone. i think in all my speeches for the future, i will be using a lot of facts and statistics because this will help my audience connect with my speech better.

self evaluation

Walking into my COMM 20 class where I had to give a 5 minutes speech in front of everyone was very nerve racking. I was trying to be as confident as possible before and during the speech so that my speech will go very smoothly. Unfortunately, my nervousness was building up as it came closer and closer for me to go up and give me speech. It was my turn soon enough and I tried to stay calm as possible but I couldn’t. I went up in front of the class and took a deep breathe and looked up into my audience. This was it, I had to overcome my fear. My hands were sweaty, my heart was beating ridiculously fast and I couldn’t even recognize my voice. The one thing that was going through my mind was that I just needed to get this over with so just hurry up. When I finished, I knew my speech was not as I have planned. Things I could have improved were eye contact, less reading off my note card and engaging with my audience.

When I practiced my speech in front of my mirror, I was doing very well with my eye contact, well maybe its because I was just looking at myself. When actually presenting my speech in front of everyone, it was very different then looking at myself. I tried keeping my eyes on a swivel and trying to make eye contact with everyone but it was just too hard. I was way to nervous to look into someone’s eyes and have them judge me through their eyes. For my next speech, I will definitely work on that and I will practice in front of people before going into the class.

I made a note card so that when I was lost with my speech I can glance at it and stay on track, but I happened to look at the note card more then my audience and yes I did notice it. When I looked out into my audience I begin to get nervous therefore I kept my eyes on the note card as much as possible. Also, another reason I just read off the note card is because I was not fairly ready for my speech. I practiced it a couple of times but mostly just reading off the note card itself. I think for my next speech I will know a lot about my topic since it interest me and therefore I will almost even speak from the heart.

I believe one big improvement I need to develop is to engage my audience and have them on the same level as me. My attention getter should have been better to get my audience more interested in my topic instead of actually just informing them about my topic. I also should have used real like examples to maybe relate to my audience instead of just explaining the history. For my next speech I will probably be engaging with my audience way more and have them on the same level as me so I can relate more information with them.

After finishing up my speech, I thought to myself, “man I did a horrible job on this speech and I know I could have done things so much better. I should have made better eye contact, read less off my note card and engaged with my audience more.” Overall I don’t think I did that bad because I thought it would have gone worse. Never in my life have I ever given a speech for that long in a class before. So for my first time giving a informative speech I think I did ok.
